Interpol - Interpol
It’s hard to be too harsh on an act you’ve loved. Interpol’s first and second albums were brooding masterpieces in their own time. But sadly this one is just a bit dull. It just doesn’t have the same polish and sharpness of old and it bears all the hallmarks of a band getting tired and running out of ideas (so tired in fact that founding member Carlos D quit the band after this album was completed). There aren’t a whole number of engaging tunes and although some critics have suggested there are deeper elements on show since it is such a personal album, I think Interpol were better when they did their thinking in a more detached way. I rarely agree wholeheartedly with Pitchfork but this review is surprisingly spot on. Go read it and see for yourself.
