Steve Mason - Boys Outside

This is the first record out under his own name, but you’ll recognize Mason’s smooth, calm voice from The Beta Band, Black Affair or King Biscuit Time.  This album is more like The Beta Band than his other works, though it’s always a pleasure to hear his latest incarnation, and the growth between each new project.  There’s a beautiful, swaying tension to Boys Outside - between slow lyrics and a faster beat, or the push and pull of piano in the foreground calling to a fading voice.  This is another win, and it’s nice to see Mason’s get a little name recognition finally.
