Escort - Escort

I discovered Escort through a club remix of the first track on this album, Caméleon Chameleon, which first appeared on an NPR podcast and then in my SoundCloud feed.  Now I’m listening to the full album, thanks to the power of the internet.  These guys are funky as hell, rediscovering the old disco roots of Brooklyn via the medium of gloriously upbeat tracks mixed with a sly sense of modernism.  Officially tipping Escort as a live band for 2012…

LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening

And indeed it is.  This is the third and, allegedly, final LCD Soundsystem record.  James Murphy has always thrust his influences to the forefront of his music to a comically ironic effect and this album is no different.  Somebody’s Calling Me is as clear a homage to Berlin-era Iggy Pop as I’ve ever heard (the beat is straight out of Nightclubbing).  But, as always, he manages to pull off something far greater than a lazy pastiche - it’s a driving, amusing and remarkably personal album.  It’s perhaps not quite as strong as its predecessor, Sound of Silver, but that’s based on only a few listens and LCD records are notorious growers.  Ultimately, the lasting impression you get from this album is not of Murphy’s record collection; but that it is quite simply and definitively LCD Soundsystem.  And that’s the magic.

Pantha Du Prince - Black Noise

This here is minimalist, organic techno-dub electronic music from Germany.  Now there’s one thing I thought I’d never find myself writing on this blog.  But it’s an interesting, chilled out listen - the beats are slow and the composition incredibly intricate and mind-bending.  It also features contributions from Noah Lennox (Panda Bear) & James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem). Recommended listen.
